Permaculture is a term created in the 70’s by Bill Mollinson and David Holgrem (check them out on Wikipedia). It is used to describe an approach that uses land and resources in sustainable ways. In permaculture we work with nature, not against it, observing the diversity and interdependence of natural ecosystems and applying the same basic principes to our own use of land and resources. Permaculture principles can apply to large parcels of land, as in farming and forestry; but people are also finding them useful in small scale and more domestic situations: gardens, homes even workplaces and in business. The principles are relevant to low carbon, energy descent planning, sustainable lifestyles, green living and the Transition Movement. The following seems a useful definition: “Permaculture is a design discipline for sustainable human habitation” Take a look at the Heathcote Community website to see permaculture in action.
